Hankook Ventus S1 evo 3 vs Michelin Pilot Sport 5

This head-to-head pits two popular max-performance summer tyres with subtly different philosophies: the Hankook Ventus S1 evo 3 and the Michelin Pilot Sport 5. Across seven shared tests from 2022-2025, the Michelin typically places higher overall (6 test wins vs. 1), yet the Hankook frequently lands the shorter braking distances, especially in the wet.

Expect the Michelin to deliver stronger aquaplaning resistance, better subjective handling and steering precision, and class-leading wear. The Hankook counters with consistently short wet and dry stopping, lower price, and a quieter, more comfort-leaning road feel-appealing traits for everyday driving.

  • Lower purchase price and strong value metrics
  • Quiet, comfortable and refined ride
  • Competitive rolling resistance in some sizes/tests
  • Excellent aquaplaning resistance (straight and curved)
  • Strong subjective handling/steering and balanced dynamics
  • Outstanding wear and low abrasion (long tread life)
  • Well-rounded performance with frequent overall test wins

Real World Driver Reviews

Hankook Ventus S1 evo 3 Driver Reviews

Most drivers rate the Hankook Ventus S1 evo 3 positively, praising strong wet and dry grip, low noise, high comfort, and excellent durability/wear on many vehicles (including EVs). A recurring minority critique is soft sidewalls causing vague steering/feedback and some cases of faster wear or aquaplaning as tread drops. Overall, the S1 evo 3 is seen as a great-value, comfortable UUHP tyre with safe, predictable performance.

Based on 59 reviews with an average rating of 77%

Michelin Pilot Sport 5 Driver Reviews

Across 75 reviews, drivers largely praise the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 for outstanding wet and dry grip, confidence-inspiring stability, and strong comfort/refinement for daily use. Many report very good to exceptional tread life, though a notable minority cite quicker wear, understeer/numb steering feel, and occasional out-of-round/noise issues; overall sentiment is strongly positive for road-focused performance.

Fitted a set of these to my Mazda3 Sport Nav. I've always been a fan of Hankook tyres but have had various on different cars, Michelin to Budget.

First thing you notice with these tyres is just how much they improve the ride. The car had stock Dunlop Sport Maxx TT tyres and whilst these gave a sharper steering feel you felt every little ripple in the road. The Hankooks certainly smoothed things out, with only a small trade off in steering feel. Next is the grip. In both wet and dry I've been known to do some pretty stupid things, but I've yet to trigger the ABS or lose grip... Continue reading this review using the link below

I've bought the new Michelin Pilot Sport 5 for my Golf R as I previously had the Pilot Sport 4 tyres. What a fantastic difference these new tyre are. Theres far less noise, the grip in the wet is better and the dry grip is almost the same if not better as well. I would definitely be buying these again.

Conclusion

The data paints a clear pattern: Michelin Pilot Sport 5 is the more rounded performer and the safer choice in deeper water, combining solid dry/wet balance, the best aquaplaning reserves, lower rolling resistance in several tests, and standout tread life (often 30-60% better). It also tends to score higher for subjective handling and steering, explaining its higher overall rankings.

Hankook Ventus S1 evo 3 is the braking specialist and value play. It repeatedly stops shorter-particularly in wet braking-while offering lower noise, agreeable comfort, and a much lower purchase price. Its drawbacks are modest aquaplaning resistance and a touring-lean steering feel, plus weaker wear, which can erode long-term value despite the initial saving.

Bottom line: choose Michelin for all-weather confidence at speed, long life, and driver engagement; choose Hankook if you prioritize sharp braking performance, comfort, and upfront value for predominantly everyday road use.
Key Differences
  • Overall results: Michelin leads (6 wins vs. 1), indicating better all-round scoring
  • Braking: Hankook often stops shorter, especially in wet (e.g., −8.95% vs PS5 in one test)
  • Aquaplaning: Michelin clearly superior in straight and curved tests
  • Subjective dynamics: Michelin more precise and engaging; Hankook feels more touring-biased
  • Wear/longevity: Michelin markedly better (e.g., +32-58% tread life advantages)
  • Value profile: Hankook cheaper and quieter; Michelin higher upfront price but better lifecycle value

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
